Fearrington Village Adopt-a-Highway Group

Fearrington Village Adopt-A-Highway 2010 Group Editorial note: Unless someone steps forward to be the new coordinator(s), the May 2013 collection will be the last one for this long-running valuable community activity. We can't let this happen. Certainly in this community, someone will come forth to coordinate the loyal 10 - 15 regular dedicated members who need a leader.

Bev and I are stepping down from our coordinator positions with AAH at the end of May 2013. We have been proud to serve in this capacity for six years here in Fearrington Village. We have accumulated some very cherished photos of the various volunteers taking care of our community over more than a half decade. This spirit of community involvement is what makes up the character of Fearrington Village.

We are still seeking a new coordinator to begin on June 01, 2013. Anyone interested in taking over as coordinator(s) of the AAH group here should direct their correspondence to the FHA Director of Community Affairs, Deborah DiSabatino This email address is being protected from spambots. Bev and I will assist the person chosen in acclimating themselves to this position and both of us plan to continue to work with AAH as volunteers of a very worthwhile civic endeavor.

How easy is it for someone to become the new Coordinators of Adopt-A-Highway on June 01, 2013?  It's very easy.

  • We will call DOT to report the name of the new coordinator, once known.
  • When a new person joins the group, you need to refer them to the required on-line safety reading, which is available here.
  • You will keep 2 orange signs in your garage or home and put them on post before the pick-ups: PICK-UP IN PROGRESS
  • You will keep a box of orange bags, pickers, gloves and vests in your garage or home. These supplies can be replenished at least once a year in Siler City at DOT.
  • There is NO need for a truck.
  • After the pick-up you drive by and count the orange bags, so that you can call an automated phone line at NCDOT with the number of bags.
  • You also send an e-mail to Jon Darling so that he can update the Adopt-A-Highway blog on fearringtonfha.org and post the future pick-up date.
  • Can you pick-up Quarterly instead of Monthly?  Yes, while we have conducted monthly pick-ups, NCDOT actually only requires a group to do quarterly pick-ups. You might want to to pick up six times a year instead of 12, each before a holiday.
  • Can there be more than one Coordinator to share the duties? Yes, sharing the duties helps everyone.

Ray & Bev Andrews

Volunteers usually meet on the last Saturday of each month at the Gathering Place parking lot to get equipment and work assignments. Collectively, we pick up litter from our assigned two miles of Route 15-501. Fearrington Village has been an active participant in the North Carolina Department of Transportation Adopt-A-Highway Program for more than 20 years. Our goal is to maintain property values and keep our beautiful state clean and green.

tools in shadows 1We presently communicate through e-mail, however, the Fearrington Forum may prove to be a more robust way of communicating information. The group meets at 7:30am during the spring and summer and 8:30am during fall and winter.  The work is not strenuous, and can be a good form of exercise. FHA provides the group with reachers to save our backs, and DOT provides the bags, vests, and gloves. We usually complete the task in two hours.
