Brightspeed Construction – Further Update

Brightspeed Construction – Further Update

This is a status update about the proposed installation of fiber optic cable in the Village by Brightspeed (formerly known as CenturyLink). Residents may recall that in mid-April, the FHA and the Service Groups met with Brightspeed and asked about its legal authority to proceed, as discussed in the President’s Message in the May Belted Gazette and in THIS POST on our website.

Brightspeed recently responded and showed us that it has permission from the State to lay fiber optic cable along the public roads in the Village, and therefore will resume laying cable on those roads starting in mid-May. They have committed to provide a schedule of installation as they move through the Village, which we will post as we receive it. However, there are many private streets in the Village belonging to Service Groups. In order for cable to be installed along each of these streets, the Service Group owning it must approve, in conformity with the requirements of its covenants.

Your FHA and representatives of various Service Groups again met with Brightspeed. The company is very aware of the mistake it made in not notifying anyone before beginning installation last month, and apologized for its mistake. Further meetings will be required to coordinate the approval process with the Service Groups and to develop a list of contacts in case of problems.

We want to make clear that the FHA and the Service Groups did not and do not oppose the installation of high speed cable in the Village. We merely asked Brightspeed to establish that it had the right to perform such installation, and to pause its work until it had done so. Hopefully, this issue is now resolved, and we can all move forward together.
