Newsletter Guidelines

The Belted Gazette newsletter editors use the following guidelines to publish the Village monthly newsletter. Residents and community organizations submitting material are asked to follow these practices.

Guidelines

Purpose

The Belted Gazette is an important channel of communication between the FHA Board of Directors, Fearrington clubs and organizations, and residents of the Village. The Board uses the newsletter to inform residents of important issues and decisions. Clubs and other organizations report on their activities and announce upcoming events of village-wide interest. The Belted Gazette also includes features on topics of general interest to residents.

Residents are welcome to suggest topics of interest to the editors and/or submit material for possible inclusion.

How to Submit Announcements, Articles and Photos

Send all submissions, feature article ideas, and other material as well as questions to editors@fearringtonfha.org.

Announcements. Organizations, groups, clubs, community non-profits, and local government agencies wishing to publicize an upcoming event or add an event to the monthly calendar should submit this content using the Announcement Submission Form (may be downloaded from the website or requested from the editors).

Frequency: Notices of coming events may appear in The Belted Gazette (and its calendar) up to two times: once during the month before the event and once during the month of the event.

Deadline:  Content must be received by midnight of the 15th of the preceding month (e.g., November 15 for an announcement in the December issue). Submissions received earlier than the deadline are welcome and appreciated.

Feature Articles. Individuals interested in writing an article of general interest to the Village community should submit their ideas for approval to the Features Editor via editors@fearringtonfha.org.  Please review the Feature Article Submission Guidelines online or requested from the editors.

Feature article deadline:  Articles approved for publication must be received by midnight of the 10th of the preceding month (e.g., November 10 for an article appearing in the December issue).

FHA Submissions: The board member responsible submits content. Please include the responsible individual’s name and contact information. Deadline is midnight of the 15th of the preceding month.

Photographs and Other Images

Do you have photographs or other images to accompany an article, or for consideration otherwise? Please review the Photo Submission Guidelines under the “Belted Gazette Newsletter/Newsletter Submissions” tab. Note that The Belted Gazette limits the photos and artwork used in its online and print editions to work created by residents of Fearrington Village, images in the public domain that do not require attribution and/or source links, and images used with the permission of the artist/photographer.

Size of Submissions

  • No size limitations apply to official FHA content.
  • Fearrington groups and clubs, as well as outside groups or charities, are encouraged to limit content to 150 words or fewer.
  • Recommended length of feature articles is 1000 words or fewer. For topics requiring more depth, contributors may discuss with the editors the possibility of a short series.
  • All content may be edited for space and clarity.

Publication & Distribution

Publication: The Belted Gazette is published every month except August and is distributed a few days before the beginning of the month. Residents registered in the FHA Directory are sent The Belted Gazette by email. Current and back issues of the newsletter can be found on the FHA webpage (fearringtonfha.org) under the “Belted Gazette Newsletter” heading on the main menu.

Unacceptable Content  The Belted Gazette generally does not publish:

  • Reprints from other publications
  • Letters to the editor
  • Commercial advertising
  • Advocacy or political articles
  • Obituaries
  • Personal thank-you notes
  • Commentaries from individuals

Editorial Decisions

All editorial decisions are at the discretion of the editors with guidance from the FHA Director of Communications. Questions or comments should be sent by email to editors@FearringtonFHA.org.

Use of Content

By submitting content for use in The Belted Gazette, the submitter will certify that the content is its own original content and that the submitter has the unencumbered right to grant to the FHA and The Belted Gazette, and does grant, a royalty-free, non-exclusive license to reproduce and share such content in print or digital form in the FHA newsletter and/or on the FHA website for as long as the website exists.
