Josie Dickson, who spoke about photographing birds at the Garden Club’s kickoff meeting in September, snapped this photo of a male yellow-bellied sapsucker in her yard on Beechmast Drive. The yellow-bellied sapsucker is a medium-sized woodpecker (7.1-8.7 inches) that breeds in forested areas across Canada, eastern Alaska and the northeastern U.S.. There is also a separate population of these birds found in high elevations of the Appalachian Mountains, Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina.
